As you enter the gates of Vaticano, there is a mute excitement in your mind and you enter the world of marble, light and centuries of history. Once entering Basilica di San Pietro, you are engulfed by its size and elegance of the human worship. You follow a skilled guide, and, with the help of a special headset to keep every word at hand, you pass under the high arches and past the family of shining columns, and in one of them you can read all the faces hewn out, the gold inlaid, the burden of centuries. It makes the space alive, unveiling the meaning of every architectural decision, sculpture, and a ray of light. Before Michelangelo’s Pieta, you stop, and the marble, as though it were made of tender stuff, appears to have been mellowed. With the emotion that is modeled on the face of Mary, it becomes very human, intimate even with all the fame. You pass by candlelit altars and glittering mosaics which change with the light, and down into the papal crypts, and there the silence and shadow give you an unusual insight into the forgotten history of the Church.
Stories unfold at every turn. The towering Baldachin of Bernini towers over the altar and your guide tells you how the sweeping forms of bronze are a statement of power and faith. Under the great dome you look up and think of the generations of hands and minds which made a space which should give the eye and the heart their elevation. There are even finer nuances, when the guide identifies the way light breathes life into stucco and stone, and how even architecture can be an emotion roused.
The tempo is slow and pensive. This is not a hurried visit, but one that is more of a talk with the past. You hang about where curiosity attracts you, before a silent chapel, or a radiant mosaic, or some monumental statue that is almost alive. The guide is self-adaptive, allowing the wonder as the guide. Coming back to the main nave, the basilica is as old and alive as it is full of memory and meaning. You take much more than images with you, going out under the Roman sky. You walk away with a better bond, a tale now somewhat of your own.
It is not just another guided tour of Basilica di San Pietro, this one offered by La visita in Vaticano. It calls upon you to give it your utmost, to perceive it, to penetrate it, with wisdom, with profundity, with an almost silent element of wonder that is never forgotten as soon as you move.

Arte, storia e quiete insieme
Parlare attraverso secoli di fede e creatività sotto quegli archi... era come se la basilica parlasse attraverso la nostra guida. Me ne sono andata commossa.
